I have the sad news that I will be leaving Transition Chandlers Ford at the end of May. I have decided to concentrate my efforts on Transition Southampton since I live in Southampton. Eastleigh Transition Network continues to exist and will be continuing its activities, so if you would like to continue receiving updates, please join up to the mailing list at: http://eepurl.com/e2ZQM. Many thanks for all of you who turned up to events, helped the group and supported me along the way. It's been great fun. I may see you sometime in the future.

Films

Films to view online about saving climate change:

In Transition
'In Transition’ is the first detailed film about the Transition movement filmed by those that know it best, those who are making it happen on the ground. The Transition movement is about communities around the world responding to peak oil and climate change with creativity, imagination and humour, and setting about rebuilding their local economies and communities. It is positive, solutions focused, viral and fun.

The Convenient Solution
A short film about climate change, energy and nuclear power. If you're confused about whether we need nuclear power to stop climate change, take nine minutes of your time to watch our new film. It doesn't just explain why nuclear power can't stop climate change - it also points the way to a better, cheaper, more convenient solution.

Decentralised Energy, what are we waiting for?
Two thirds of all energy generated in the UK's nuclear, coal and gas fuelled power stations is lost as waste heat - that's enough heat to meet the whole of the UK's heating and hot water needs. Greenpeace has launched a new short film, "What are we waiting for?" Made by BAFTA award-winning Memory Box Films and narrated by Clive Anderson, the film answers the crucial energy question facing the UK: how can we combat climate change and ensure energy security without nuclear power.

How CHP works
CHP is the heart of an efficient, decentralised energy system. It's the most efficient way possible to burn fuel because so little energy is lost as waste heat. That's how CHP plants in Denmark can reach up to 95 per cent efficiency. Because the heat needs to be captured and piped around the local district, CHP plants are usually sited in the towns and cities where the electricity and heat will be used. This makes it more efficient for electricity generation as well as heat; very little energy is lost in transmission.

How Biogas works
Biogas typically refers to a gas produced by the biological breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Comprised primarily of methane and carbon dioxide, biogas originates from biogenic material and is a type of biofuel. It's a product of the anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable materials such as manure or sewage, and can be used in CHP plants

How Tidal Power works
Another little flash animation taken from EfficienCity, a virtual demonstration of how real world communities around the UK can use renewable and energy efficient systems to enjoy lower greenhouse gas emissions, cheaper electricity and heating bills, and a more secure energy supply.

How Wave Power works
A silent but informative introduction to how wave power works. The power in our seas is vast - and wave power is at an innovative stage. According to government and industry figures, wave and tidal power combined could meet 12.5 per cent of today's electricity demand - economically and practically - by 2025.It's an opportunity we can't afford to let slip.

How Micro Hydro works
Micro hydro uses diverted river water to local produce up to 100 KW of power. Very useful in water rich areas where access to other energy sources is difficult. Find out how it works in this minute long silent animation.

Take Aim at Climate Change
An upbeat invitation to "Take AIM at Climate Change" - with "AIM" standing for Adapt, Innovate, Mitigate. The lyrics are based on the latest science of Earth's changing climate, with the music a mix of rap and pop. Four verses connect changes in the Arctic and Antarctic to conditions around the planet, with choruses encouraging long-term thinking, and individual and community action. Optimistic, forward-thinking, but now's the time to act. "Yes we can!" take AIM at climate change.

Human Power Station
A Bang Goes the Theory special event showing how much electricity we use and abuse without even thinking about it. This massive experiment attempts to power a house for an entire day solely through human pedal power - while the unsuspecting family inside go about their normal Sunday routine. Will they drive the Human Power Station to meltdown?

Wake Up, Freak Out then Get a Grip
It’s much, much later than you think. Tipping point ahead. This really isn’t about polar bears any more. At this very moment, the fate of civilization itself hangs in the balance. It turns out that the way we have been calculating the future impacts of climate change up to now has been missing a really important piece of the picture. It seems we are now dangerously close to the tipping point in the world's climate system; this is the point of no return, after which truly catastrophic changes become inevitable.

The Lorax
The wise words of the Once-ler are worth listening to as he spins a fanciful tale with a serious theme: Clean up the environment before it's too late! In this delightful story, the student is introduced to "Thneeds which everyone needs." And the Lorax? Just who is he and what does he do? Only Dr. Seuss can describe this creature—which he does so charmingly with typical Seussian logic.

NBC Nightly News Ocean Acidification

The American Denial of Global Warming
Polls show that between one-third and one-half of Americans still believe that there is ""no solid"" evidence of global warming, or that if warming is happening it can be attributed to natural variability. Others believe that scientists are still debating the point. Join scientist and renowned historian Naomi Oreskes as she describes her investigation into the reasons for such widespread mistrust and misunderstanding of scientific consensus and probes the history of organized campaigns designed to create public doubt and confusion about science.

Acid Test (trailer)
This documentary explores the phenomenon of ocean acidification, which may challenge marine life on a scale not seen for tens of millions of years. The film, featuring Sigourney Weaver, will air on Discovery Planet Green throughout Blue August, a month devoted to programming about the wonders and mysteries of the oceans.

The Other CO2 Problem
A animation about the issue of ocean acidification, produced by Ridgeway School (Plymouth, UK) and Plymouth Marine Laboratory (www.pml.ac.uk). Funded by the European Project on OCean Acidification.

Brompton nano electric bike
This is the product of 5 years work to build the 'best' electric folding bike. This is a real humdinger!! The motor kit adds just 12 pounds to a bike (5 pounds for the motor, 7 for the battery and controller). It does 15 mph and tows a 190 pound carcass up 14% slopes.
